This is an inflammatory condition that mainly affects 2-year-old horses especially the racing ones that are thoroughbred. However, even adult horses in training have been diagnosed with the same.

It occurs naturally and is mainly attributed to the timing of horse’s bone establishment during the early periods of training when it’s still young. Logically, when the horse frequently moves very fast during its early stages of life, it does not allow for healthy bone formation. Older horses training for the first time are also a vulnerable lot.

Bucked shins are serious and challenging complications for trainers since about 70 percent of racehorses that go into training develop it and though it is treatable, 12% of the animals affected develop stress fractures at later ages of their lives.

The problem is treated by giving the horse short intervals of rest followed by gradual increase in exercise.

SynNutra Equine is a company that conducts research and mainly uses herbal ingredients in solving medical problems affecting racehorses, bucked shins being one of them.
